Comprised of Denman Maroney/hyperpiano. Emilie Lesbros/voc, Robin Fincker/ts-c;, Scott Walton/b and Samuel Silvant/dr, the Denman Maroney Quintet combine modern classical with some clever post bop ideas on this two disc album.
The first album, entitled “The Air-Cnditined Nightmare”, include Lesbros taking you on a rich journey while she melds through the reeds on “A Game Of Chess” Maroney is lively when featured on “ Roads” and impressionistic for “Sailing to Byzantium” with the team digging into a soulful groove on”A Way Out of No Way”.
The second album, entitled “Covid Variations” is filled with ideas inspired by Thelonious Monk, including Monk’s own angular “Stuff Turkey”. Fincker’s tenor is perfectly fit for this quirky pieces, like the angular “Din” and bouncy “If I Were You” while Silvant’s brushes glide on “Scamander”. Jazzy jaunts.
