SLIDE RULE…The Las Vegas Boneheards: Sixty and Still Cookin’

Well, if you want some trombone in your stew, you’ll get it overflowing with sliding leader Curt Miller with two more bass ‘bone men in Sonny Hernandez & Ralph Pressler, along with brass men Nathan Tanouye, Nate Kimball, Hai Macaggi, Andrew Boostrom and also guest Andy Martin to bring in enough sliding action to make Ricky Henderson jealous.
Oh, yes, there’s also a rhythm section in Uli Geissendoerfer/, Steve Flora/b and Larry Aberman/dr just to keep things together, and the moods range from a cleverly funkified read of “Giant Steps” to a Brazilin “Samba Dee Bones”, with a mix of brass fanfares and solos. The horns are bold on “Carl” and sleekly polished on Lee Morgan’s “Ceora”, bopping to “Al Cohn Tune” and bel canto for “Skylark”. Can you tell the soloists apart? Who cares! Put your head between the speakers and let it rip!
