For most of its existence, the SFJAZZ Collective have produced albums focusing on a singular musical artist, as in Wayne Shorter. This time around, the team of Chris Potter/ts-ss, Kendrick Scott/dr, David Sanchez/ts, Warren Wolf/vib, Mike Rodriguez/tp, Matt Brewer/b and Edward Simon/p mix and match compositions, with just about everyone getting a spotlight on a pastiche of tunes. A take of “God Bless The Child/That’s The Way Of The World” is cleverly arranged by Chris Potter, who’s tenor glows in the process. Sanchez glides over Simon’s sleek groove of “Hacienda Y Capataz” with Wolf delightfully bouncing alongside the ivories on “Prelude/Someday We’ll All Be Free”. Potter’s soprano floats over Scott’s pulse on a dramatic “Land’s End” and Rodriguez rumbles on “Smokey”. While there is no stated theme, the general unifying characteristic here is professional passion.
