Phil Ravita plays both upright and electric bass for a wide range of swinging settings as his team of Mark Leppo/vib-cong, Benny Russell/ts-ss, Nucleo Vega/dr, Greg small/p and Deirde Jennings/voc take on a mix of originals and standards. Of the latter, Ravita gooses up “Caravan” with his electric bass for some searing soprano work by Russell, whereas the acoustic bass introduces Jennings sensuous read of “Black Coffee”. Small is sleek on a bouncy Latin pulse of “Peace and Love” featuring Russells’ brawny tenor, with Vega laying down a funky backbeat with the leader on “Sepia”. The rhythm section skates like a Gold Medal Olympiad on December 2021” and gives a cadence like a gazelle for the moody “Sisters”. Flexible and yet firm.
