Peter Epstein: Two Legs Bad

For his first album as a leader in almost ten years, saxist/composer Peter Epstein fronts a team of Julien Knowles/tp, Adam Benjamin/p-key, Dave Strawn/g, Zack Teran/b and Miguel Jimenez-Cruz for some mixes of post bop with fusiony ideas.

Epstein’s soprano agonizes around the rich horns over the stomping drums of “Pajaro Dunes” while his sax in a Coltrane mood around Benjamin’s keys on the bold and rockish “B320”. Knowles is elegiac on “Conjunction” with Teran leading the team through some space travel during “Never Odd or Even”. The horns hover around the traffic jam and electric effects of “Two Legs Bad” and float on a dreamy “Tepper”. Intriguing harmonies, directions and aural sketches.
