Joe Locke: Makram

One of today’s most consistent and creative vibes players, Joe Locke mixes his regular working team of Jim Ridi/key, Lorin Cohen/b and Samvel Sarkisyan/dr-cym with a handful of guests on a highly percussive and fusioned session. Middle Eastern instruments in the riq and oud are brought in by Bahaa Dou and Samir Nasr Eddine respectively on a spirited title tune, while rich brass textures from Doug Beavers/tb, Eric C Davis/frh and Jennifer Wharton/btb-tba add to the groove of the stately “Raise Heaven (For Roy)” and lovely “Elegy For Us All”. Tim Garland’s woodwinds glide around rich piano and vibes on an enticing “Tushkin” while the regular team gives Cohen some space on “Interwoven Hues”. Locke himself, and by himself, serves up a gorgeous nocturne of “Lush Life” that resonates like wind chimes. Glistening moments.
