Mark Lockett: Swings & Roundabouts

Music inspired by Ornette Coleman’s groundbreaking quartet of the late 50s is saluted with original material delivered by drummer Mark Lockett and his team of David Binney/as, Duane Eubanks/tp and Matt Penman/b. The style, once considered cataclysmic, is quite easily accessible these days, with a peppy charge of the horns on “Happy Go Lucky”, horns akin to a traffic jam on “Post Gig Blues” and fun stop tarts on the snappy “The Crib”. Binney is born for this role, teaming up with Eubanks for  awarm intro to “Here’s to Ornette” and going neck an dneck with him on ‘Rhubarb Crumble”. Penman gives a bluesy intro to “Virtual Reality “ and leads through the clutter on “Out On  Parole” while the leader guides and cajoles throughout. This is their music.
