Consisting of Reed Mathis/b, Josh Raymer/b, Todd Stoops/keys and Olay Welch/g and guest Jason Hann/pec, the band Electric Beethoven take The Great Ludwig Songbook and puree it through a funky mix of modern tones. Not unlike what Deodato did to classical music back in the 1970s, Mathis and company give a soulful feel to the strutting “Elise”, shuffle with a B3 on the hip hopping “Ode To Joy” and give a swampfest to “Moonlight Sonata”. There are lots of synths and samples to share, most notably on the rocking “The Seventh” and dominating on the remixes of each tune. Anyone hiding a disco ball in the closet?
