Continuing the tradition of tenor saxists, Chris Potter stakes his claim at the legendary Village Vanguard, here with Craig Taborn/p, Scott Colley/b , and M arcus Gilmore in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Potter and company respond in kind, with the leader in a big and beefy Rollins-esque mood. He brings an inspiring solo intro to “You Gotta Move” that turns into a funky frenzy, not letting up all the way through the deep rivulet of the title track that closes the evening. In between. Taborn brings a dreamy mood into a spacious reading of “Blood Count”, Gilmore snaps everyone to attention with piano and sax marching in step to the bopper “Klactoveedsedstene” and brings nimble sticks to the moody “Nozani Na”. Potter and Colley flex their biceps, and Potter his buccinators in particular on a stretch out of “Olha Maria”. The walls were shaking this night in The Village.
