Drummer Kendrick Scott leads a trio with tenor saxist Walter Smith III and bassist Reuben Rogers through a collection of concise segues and complete songs that never overstay their welcome.
Of the former, there’s a collection of sax layers on the velvety “One Door Closes” while Royston makes some high-pitched statements during “Another Opens”. The most assertive piece is the closing “Threshold” with Scott rumbling in the opening remarks. Besides that , Smihth is warm as he glides into Scott’s b rushes on ”A Voice Through The Door” and is fluffy over the mallets on “One Door Closes Another Opens”. Everyone is understated on “Isn’t This My Sound Around Me?”, and hip to the graceful groove of “Your Destiny Awaits”. Holding back makes you lean forward.
