If you’ve ever heard those classical album son labels like Telefunken or Archive that had Baroque or pre-Baroque music on “period instruments”, you’ll understand this latest release by leaders Gianluigi Trovesi and concertmaster Stefano Montari. Trovesi plays three types of clarinet, while Montanri leads a little chamber orchestra that includes strings, percussion and woodwinds, resulting in a lovely music that hearkens back 400 years or so.
Playful Renaissance sounds abound on tunes lik e “Bergheim” and the melancholic “L’ometto Disarmato” with reeds in long tone form teamed with strings on “Consonanze Stravaganti”. Oboe and Harpsichord prance on ”For A While” and the dancers waltz on the stately “Dido and Aeneas”. Music for Louis XIV.
