Left with blues in the night…
Bassist Rick Rosato gives a tribute to the blues and bop on this solo album of deep sounds. He does a resonant rendition of Elvin Jones’ “Elvin’s Guitar Blues” while going spacious on Thelonious Monk’s “Crepescule With Nellie”. A couple Skip James pieces have him bending the strings on “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” and giving patience to “Devil Got My Woman” while hitting hard on “Cherry Ball Blues”. Mississippi John Hurt’s “Boys, You’re Welcome” gives an ominous glow and Muddy Waters is stirred deeply for “I Can’t Be Satisfied”. Basic bass blues.
Guitarist Doug Wamble sounds Kenny Rankinish on his vocals with the eye on the blues with Eric Revis/b, Jeff “Tain” Watts/dr and Prometheus Jenkins/sax. There’s a folksy mix of jazz and blues with Jenkins on the baritone sax on “Homesick” while the team goes into beatnik mode for the hip “MAGA Brain”. Wamble does some nice picking on the loose “No Worries” and the team gets into a funky 70s mood with Jenkins on the soprano during “Along The Way”. There’s also a nifty instrumental “Blues To The Unfound” and the team trudges like they’re on the chain gang for a sinewy “If I’m Evil”. Casual blue jeans.
