Drummer Ernesto Cervini creates a cornucopia of moods with a rotating team of singers and musicians on this cheerful album of concise compositions. Included in the session is a horn section of Virginia MacDonald/cl, Tara Davidson/as, Luis Deniz/as, Kelly Jefferson/ts-ss, William Carn/tb and Jim Lewis/tp. Vocalists include Felicity Williams, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Amy Cervini and Alex Samaras with a rhythm team of Adrean Farrugia/p, Don Scott/g and Dan Fortin-Artie Roth-Rich Brown/b with Cervini supplying the foundation. The voices create an ethereal and elegant atmosphere on “Three Pines” while a mix of art and eeriness takes place on “The Moth”. The team shows its bop chops with Cervini snapping with Jefferson’s tenor on “Surprised By Joy” and loosely swinging with his soprano sax on the modern mooded “Lacoste.” Electric bassist Brown rocks hard on “Beauvoir” and teams up with Deniz on the pulsating “Roar and Havoc”. There are some quirky moments with MacDonald and Lewis on the blue “Ruth’s Rosa” while the horns brood on “The Beautiful Mystery” and float on the elegiac “I’m FINE”. Davidson sighs on her aria of “Clara” and Farrugia gets a spotlight on the impressionistic “Peter Morrow”. Cervini creates atmospheres as well as songs.
