A WARM WINTER…Paul Winter Consort: Concert In The Barn

One of the founding members of the style and sound that became eventually known as “World Music”, Paul Winter, at 82, still sounds as fresh and vibrant as an early morning sunrise. This latest album  has the soprano saxist mixed and matche in a “barnyard recording” team of Jeff Boratko/bassoon, Eugene Friesen/cel, Theresa Thomason/voc, Henrique Eisenmann/p, Conor Ryan/dr in settings ranging from the solo meditation of “Sun Singer” to a festival of reeds on the rhythmic “Moro Na Roca/Lapinha” . Thomason brings a rich and earthy voice to a sparkling take of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and adds texture to an oldie but goodie, Ralph Towner’s “Icarus” from the old Consort days. Winter and Eisenmann delvery a conversant impressionist “Lavadeiras” whereas Friesen and Eisenmann mix Bach with Debussy on a cleverly arranged take of “Air”. Throughout chamber tunes like “Lendas Brasileiras” and the Chora Coracao”, there is a warmth of simplicity, not unlike an early morning sunrise lurking through the windows of, well, a rural barn. Embracing.
