Konstantia Gourzi: Anajikon

For her second ECM album, Greek composer Konstantia Gourzi mixes orchestral and chamber music to moody effect on this latest release.

The album is divided into three moods. The first is a triptych Hommage A Mozart, OP. 56 that includes melodic violin on  “Con Eleganza”, gentle strings and piano for “Singing” and patient grace for strings on “Scherzoso”. Orchestral sounds are included in the four movement Ny-El-Two Angels In The White Garden, OP 65  with lilting strings and percussion for “Eviction”, rumbling beat and horns for the soundtrackish “Exodus” and dramatic strings for “Longing” that build up to a climax on the ascending climb of “The White Garden”. A quartet is used during the five pieces that make up Abahujib-The Angel in the  Blue Garden , OP 61 which includes slashing strings for “The Bright Side”, melancholic flowing and pizzicato’d pickings on “The Dark Side” and yearning strings for “The Blue Bird”. Music in search of a movie.
