Joel Frahm: The Bright Side

Saxist Joel Frahm shows that he’s imbibed deeply from the well of Sonny Rollins on this trio session with bassist Dan Loomis and drummer Ernesto Cervino. Except for Frahms misty foray on the soprano for  the delicate and soft “Silk Road” with Cervini’s deft support following Loomis’ intro, the album features the bold, big and brawny tenor in full aglow. There is a dash of Coltranesque freedom on the post bopper “Blow Poppa Joe”, but Cervini keeps things in bop mode with the snappying “Boo Dip Dip” with his brushes nimble on “Beeline”. Frahm is frothy on the brooding rubato of “The Beautiful Mystery” and rocks hard with Cervini’s backbeat on “Omer’s World”. Tenor gladness.
