Omar Sosa: An East African Journey

If you’ve seen keyboardist Omar Sosa in concert, you know that it’s like a musical National Geographic tour, taking you to exotic environs. This album has the sonic Livingston exploring East Africa in a wide ranging series of collaborations of artists with traditional materials and voices. The tube-like zither is played by Rajery as he sings to Sosa’s piano and Christophe Minck’s bass and keys on the luminous “”Veloma E” and jams on the percussive “Tsiaro Tsara” and dreamy “Dadilahy”. The lutelike nyatiti is plucked by Olith Ratego while Minck brings synth sounds to “Thouon Mok Laga” . Ethiopia’s banjo-toned krar is strummed on the swinging “Che Che” and tapped to “Tizeta” by Seleshe Damessae with the melding of dreamy folk tones and equatorial heat takes place on “Elrababa” with Dafalla Elhag’s tapping  tambur long drum. Sounds and tones of mystique.
