Yes, there is a plethora of albums giving tribute to the Bossa Nova giant Antonio Jobim, but this one by guitarist Albare is a cut above the fray. He takes the famous pieces that we’ve all grown accustomed to, but brings them to a more sophisticated and modern form without cutting away the rich lyricism of the original intent.
The string arrangements by pianist Joe Chndamo give homage to classic vintage Claus Ogerman as on “One Note Samba”, “Wave” and “Double Rainbow”, but there is an added maturity to the support that gives extra textures. The strings go pizzicato with Albare on a dainty “Orfeo Negro” while basic Ricardo Rodriquez dances with the guitarist on “Aguas de Marco” while drummer Antonio Sanchez lurks on a dark “Chega De Saudade” and “Corcovado”. You won’t make comparisons to the original albums here, as this one holds up on its own quite impressively. Bravo.
