SOFT WINDS…Billy Prim: Thalassa, Pat Irwin & J. Walter Hawkes: Wide Open Sky

Gentle sounds and moods prevail on these recent released sessions.

Drummer Billy Prim teams with Attila Blaho/p-synth, Andor Horvath/ab, Aron Turcsanyi/eb and Julia Csillag/voc for five delicate atmospheres. Prim is always understated and supportive, using delicate brushes to reflective piano on”Enlightenment” and deftly building up drama for Horvath’s solo on”Waves of Emotion.” Csillag’s nasal voice gives rich folk tones along with some dreamy synth sounds on the hovering “En Felkelek” with some strong bass strokes and strong sticks on the closing “Midnight Sea”. A grey mist of song.

Pat Irwin plays a variety of guitars, J. Walter Hawkes brings his trombone and both add electronics to a Decalogue of ambient originals. Reflective strings and dreamy brass is dominant on the title pieces and February” with a synth pulse and melodic tones on “In Another Time” and the exotically voiced “Automatic 3.” Some 50s guitar sounds are poppish on “On the QT” and create a film noir background on “ It Gets Late” and “The Setup”.  Sounds of almost silence.
