Joe McCarthy New York Afro Bop Alliance Big Band: Upwards

Drummer Joe McCarthy leads the NYABABB through a mix of jazz standards and hard hitting originals. He gives a strong percussive foundation for the saxes of Kristy NBorter and Ben Kono on a riveting read of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” and adds salsa to the bold read of John Lewis’ “Afternoon In Paris” which includes a warm flugelhorn solo by Dave Smith. “Blues For Elvin” has a Coltranish “Equinox” vibe whereas “Upwards” is a hard hitting Afro Cuban them that is in bright colors for Matt Hong’s alto and John Hao’s trombone. The sections work well on “Positano” giving space for Boris Kozlov’s bass and Vinny Valentino’s guitar, closing out the album on a rich note. Exciting charts and exuberant soloing.
