The Westerlies Quartet literally brags in brass with two trumpets by Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowlands alongside a pair of trombones in Andy Clausen with Willlem De Koch for 18 mostly concise themes. The songs range from tradition and spirituals to modern creations, and they all work wondrously. The horns at time have Coplandesque harmonies and sonorities as on “In The Mornin’” and able to give a New Orleans kick for “Eli.” Velvet textures and warm tones dominate on the folksy “Robert Henry” and “Remember Me” with a three part “Entropy” Suite mixing hip pulsations with lyrical melodies. Surprisingly accessible, without a hint of gimmickry.
