Small group Depresson-Era swing is the thing with violinist Jonathan Ng as he leads a toe tapping team of Albert Alva/ts, Luca Pino/g, Chris Dawson/p, Seth Ford-Young/b and Josh Collazo/dr. The material brims with material that predates bebop, with Ng teaming up with a big toned Alva on the jivey “Maelstrom” and the shuffling “Embryo”. A great gypsy feel is palpable on Ng’s own title track and he’s delicate with a warm touch on “Stardust”. Dawson strides up to his piano for the 2 stepping “Gin Mill Special” and Ray Charles’ “Rockhouse” is a bluesy delight as violin and tenor sax stroll down Beale Street. Ng makes jazz fun again.
