The Mavericks: Play The Hits

Together now for one and a half score years, the Mavericks, consisting of Raul Malo/voc-key-g, Eddie Perez/g, Jerry Dale Mcfadden/key and Paul Deakin/dr-vib take you on a tour of songs that have been their inspiration, puree’d through their own down home feel. The band is supplemented by the Fantastic Five of Michael Guerra/acc, Max Abrams/sax, Julio Diaz/tp, Lorenzo Molina Ruiz/tp and Ed Friedland/b as well as some cameo guests, making you feel like you’re at a late night at the local VFW.

C&W meets Memphis on the saxy “Swingin’” while a Cajun fest is a joy on the jumping “Blame It On Your Heart.” A trip to the Grand Ol’ Opry brings in a swingin’ “Don’t You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me” and Malo delivers a rich vibrato with a tear in his bear for “Why Can’t She Be You” and the Moose Lodge’d “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.” It’s the last dance for “I’m Leaving It Up To You” so put the chairs on the tables, finish your drink and head out for church tomorrow morning.
