A funk fest is delivered by the rhythm section of Larry Graves/dr-perc, Dave Chan/perc-key, Liam Smith/b, Paul MacDougall/g and the horn section of Brad Eaton/tp, Elean Kapereris/ts, Rob Neal Christian/fl and Paul Metcalfe/bs. Just about everyone sings at some point, but the focus is on a big soul’d sound, as on the bright and swinging pieces such as “Threshold” and the earnest “RH Factor.” Kaperleris’s tenor has a bit of Joe Lovano in it on the funky gospel with MacDougall on the tribute to John Scofield on “Scoffle Strut” and the team boogaloos like the Fabulous Flames on “Sunshine Interference. The grooves dig deep throughout, and the percussion percolates like fried rice with the horns in a simmering mood for “For All The Times I Never Came To See You.” Power like a Tower.
