Inspired by the music of Ornette Coleman, Remy Le Boeuf leads a rich and adventurous big band conducted by Gregory Robbins through a rich suite as well as an interpretation of Coleman’s own “Honeymooners.” Le Boeuf plays alto sax, soprano sax and flute through this Coplandesque collection of sounds and harmonies, starting with a cheerful fanfare on “Strata” and concluding with an autumnal “A Light Through The Leaves.” Velvety saxes and pianistic ripples by Martha Kato move forward on the sole Coleman pieces, while feathery flutes and gentle piano have the “Introduction” of the suite lead to somber brass and Pete Kronreif’s drums and a swinging post modern trio with bassist Matt Aronoff” that ventures into a rich cascade for “Transfiguration.” A fanfare inspired by an uncommon man.
