Soul Brass Band: Levels

Playing percussion, piano and even singing his tunes, Derrick Freeman, sets out from his 20 years beside Kermit Ruffins and leads an 11 piece band that mixes New Orleans festivities with some Southern funk. The rhythm team has a calypso spirit on the lively “Open Your Eyes” and some hot trumpet work make for upbeat soloing on ”Levels” and the Crescent City-fest of “Rendezvous.” Classic Motown sounds groove on “Circles” and the band has fun with The Wiz classic “Ease On Down The Road.” With Freeman giving hip vocals on “How Far We Come,” he shows that he has a band made for getting the crowd on its feet. When’s the next festival?
