****RINGER OF THE WEEK****THE LAST FROM “KIND OF BLUE”…Jimmy Cobb: This I Dig Of You

As the last living member of the classic Kind of Blue album, drummer Jimmy Cobb still shows no signs of slowing down at the vintage age of 90 years young. I saw him a year or so ago, and his patented ride cymbal was as crisp as ever, so it is at this February 7, 2019 session with stablemates Peter Bernstein/g, Harold Mabern/p and John Webber/dr. These guys have hard bop in their dna, and simmer well with Bernstein’s strings in a lyrical mood on a gentle “My Old Flame” and title track. Cobb and company get slinky on a hip “Blood Wolf Moon Blues” and he cracks the whip with a sizzling “Cheese Cake.” Mabern is sublime as he’s featured on “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” and his own hip “Edward Lee” and does a clever intertwine with Bernstein during a shadowy “Yesterdays.” Cobb closes things out with a tribute to his other boss from the old days, taking Wes Montgomery’s “Full House” and beating it with four of a kind. This is what makes jazz enjoyable!!
