Isn’t music supposed to put a smile on your face? If you agree, get a load of these two recent albums that are linked by the sweater sweet sounds of Mr. Fred Rogers, Presbyterian minister, jazz pianist and best friend to millions of kids.
These two albums reflect the heart and soul of our television friend. On the first, Mr. Rogers himself sings and (usually) accompanies himself on the piano, singing a lot like the similarly avuncular Hoagy Carmichael on tunes such as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and “It’s You I Like.” He’s as soft and comfortable as 10 year old Bass Weejuns on the cheerful “I Think I’m Going To Like Today” and “You Are Special.” All of the songs are best-friend upbeat and are suitable for all ages, especially while driving home after a tough day in the trenches. Beats seeing a shrink, and almost as good as a Sunday sermon; in fact, that’s what they are!
Meanwhile, pianist Johnny Costa swings out the Rogers Songbook with bassist Carl McVicker and drummer Rawsthorne. Costa’s touch has a nice supply of Art Tatum, giving rococo framework to “You Are Special,” Something To Do While We’re Waiting” and “It’s Such A Good Feeling.” He swings like Errol Garner on the fun “Sometimes People Are Good/Children Can Medley” and skates like Guaraldi on”You Are Special.” Play this alongside any Peanuts soundtrack and you’re good to go for at least a month.
