David Finck: Bassically Jazz

David Finck’s bass has graced the work of artists ranging from Tom Harrell to Clark Terry, and his wide ranging melodicism is intact here on a tasty session that mixes and matches vocalists Linda Eder and Alexis Cole with Joe Locke/vib, Jim Ridl/p, Cliff Almond/dr, Ali Ryerson/fl, Rob Mann/g, Kevin Winard/perc and Mike Davis/tb. Finck’s bowed bass supports Eder on a tender take of “The Summer Knows,” caresses the pulse with Ryerson’s flute to dance with Cole on “Bluesette” and the breezy “I Love You So” and he even sings himself in avuncular fashion with Ridl on “All My Tomorrows.”

As for instrumentals,  vibes and bass get hip for “Old Devil Moon” and the lithe “Moment’s Notice” as swaying guitar strums guide the bossa “O Barquinho.” Finck gives a rich intro that is joined in by deft brushwork as he dictates the melody on a stately “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home” and extra percussion has him sauntering through “Tuyo.” Swinging with style.
