Two ladies that sing about and with love…
Kathleen Hollingsworth sings with a style that mixes sweet with sass as she also plays keyboards with a team of Brent Follis/dr, Dave Captein and a handful of guests. Her pretty voices is sleek on a bluesy Latin lover of her own “Wave the Sun Goodbye” whereas her artsy “Weightless” is a coolish affair that includes Captein’s palpable bass. Some Nashville twang pops up on “Hey There, Rider” and “Passing of the General” while she gets into the funky swamp with guitarist Dominic Castillo on a sweaty “Easy Rider.” Real fun is a 6/8 soul groove of Benny Golson’s classic “Whisper Not” that gets into a rivulet of a pulse. This lady hits the right moods!
Yvette Norwood-Tiger teams together with a bopping quartet of trumpeter Michael Mackey, bassists Joshua Ewers or Phil McArthur, keyboardist Ken Burkhart and drummer Jose Roman Duque for a doen tunes that mix her material with classic jazz standards. She gives a riveting unaccompanied delivery of Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday” that glows like a candle in the Narthex, while a due with Burkhart on her own “Time IS A Wrecking Ball” is an alluring intimate affair. With the band, she gets passionate with Mackey on the John Coltrane’s modal “Dear Lord/Psalm 40:1-3” and asserts herself alongside Ewers’ bass line on his “Equinox.” A rich scat bouncing back with Mackey ricochet’s on her “It’s Time For Love” and she strong working up a sweat on Horace Silver’s “Song For My Father” not being intimidated at all by the bebopping trumpeter. This lady has confidence in her sweet soul.
