Marcus Shelby Orchestra: Transitions

Bassist Marcus Shelby conducts a big band that includes violinist Mads Tolling and honey toned vocalist Tiffany Austin for a swinging mix of standards and originals. He shows how to swing with nimble fingers on the bass for a thick an dmodern take of Charles Mingus’ “Remember Rockefeller” that features Matt Clark’s hip piano moves, while Tolling is gorgeous as he’s featured on the lovely Ellingtonian “On A Turquoise Cloud.” Shelby is luscious with warm toned tenor saxist Danny Brown on “Mood Indigo” while an old school stride take of “Solitude” features Austin in good company with solos by James Mahone/as and Patrick Wolff/ts, while her calypso’d “Beguin the Beguine” is a sensuous delight. A four part tour of swinging parts of the US feature a Western pulsed “Transition 1 (Pittsburgh)” with Rafa postel growling on his trumpet, Shelby and drummer Jeff Marrs clippety clopping on the strutting “Barnstormin’” and the saxes swinging on the hectic “Transition 2 (New York).” Clever versions of standards and a nice journey through the heartland of jazz in more ways than one.
