Dale Fielder Quintet: At The Threshold

Leading his own ensemble, Dale Fielder switches between alto, soprano an dtenor sax as he teams up with Nolan Shaheed/tp-ct-fh, Jane Getz/p, Bill Markus/b, and Don Littleton/dr-perc on a mix of originals and clever interpretations.

He creates some exotic musings on soprano sax, teaming with tablas on a meditative “Keshava Murahata” while is lovely and lyrical with Getz for a sweet Disney classic “When You Wish Upon a Star” and gets funky with Littleton’s backbeat for the East Indian traditional “Nataraja.” Fielder’s tenor is like a Baptist preacher as he steps to the pulpit on the gospel grooved “I Release” and he swings easy with Shaheed on the modal “Maan.” His alto is rich and vibrant, blending well with Getz and featuring an ebullient Shaheed on the Sunday feeling “I Trust In God” while the modal “Miranda’s Dance” is an exciting affair, and the team moans the blues to Markus’ bass on the title piece. An album that is successfully wide ranging in scope both geographical and spiritual.
