Guitarist Nic Vardanega leads a light and spacious quartet with Jakob Dreyer/b, Josh Roberts/dr and Michael Rodriguez/tp-fh on a rich post bop collection of originals. For the most part, his tone is strong, thick and mellow, working well with Rodriguez’s muted horn on the sleek “At First Night” as well as when the horn opens up on the sublime “New Leaves” and easy swinger of a title track. Roberts’ brushes glide to support the sweet interplay of strings on “Jacaranda” while he lays down a deft backbeat on the trio “Shadows Over Bleecker.” The leader shows he can also git down, as he hits a couple of pedals and gets swampy on the funky closer “Club Soda.” A personal touch on the strings that is impressive in its impressionisms.
