Percussionist Art “Turk” Burton gets Afro-Cuban rootsy on some jazz standards with a team of Sammie Torres/perc, Eddie Beard/p, Luis Rosario/timb, Patrice Burton/voc, Edwin Daugherty/as, Yosef Ben Israel/b, Maggie Brown/voc and Ari Brown/ts. Patrice starts thing of by telling a story of the history of drummers with some scintillating support on “Soul Drummers” while the team percolates to a gloriously salsa’d take of “Killer Joe” with some meaty tenor work by Brown. Maggie Brown does a riveting R&B take of “Night In Tunisia” with the shakers and timbales humming down a rivulet for “All Blues” and “Summertime” with lilting tenors in tow. The B3 moans on an earthy “Freedom Jazz Dance” with Ms. Brown and the take of “Listen Here” is spiced up with picante flavors for a true Nacho Mama! Ribs and salsa indeed!
