Harpdog Brown: For Love and Money

“Come along with me…down the Mississippi”

Harpdog Brown sings like he was weaned by Tom Waits and plays the harp with a wonderful wail on this stomping album along with Dave Webb/p-B3, Robert Vail Grant/dr, Steve Dawson/g, Jeremy Holmes/b and a horn team of William Joseph Abbot/cl-as, Skye Lamborurne/tb and Jerry Cook/bs-ts.

His hurricane’d harp works well with the horns with his gritty voice weaving in through “No Eyes For Me” as well as on the easy stride of the shuffling two stepper “Blue Light Boogie.” Webb can stride like Count Basie with Brown giving a Dr. John-ish growl to “Vicious Vodka” and his Hammond takes you to Kansas City for a steady 8 to the bar on a sleek and dark “The Comeback” with his own title track chicka booms with grease.

Brown sings like he’s got a few stories to tell, and he delivers them like he’s got all night as on his lay “Stiff” as well as intimate and personal “Sasha’s Lullabye.” A carney of an album.
