EVERY BREATH THEY TOOK…The Police: Everyone Stares

It’s rare that someone has the vision to capture a band of artists at their fledgling stage, but drummer Stewart Copeland was able to do exactly that.

Back in 1978, just as his band of Andy Summers and Sting were starting a band named The Police, Steward got some money to buy a Super 8 movie camera. With it, he chronicled the bnad during their touring years, interviewing each artist, friends, roadies, managers etc in countries ranging from Argentina to Egypt and Germany to show the gradual ascent and ultimate popularity of the New Wave trio.

The travelogue is filled with backstage scenes with lots of friendly banter, concert footage with Stewart adding clever comments, especially about his drumming mistakes, and of course there is tons of great archival tunes, both in concert and re-arranged studio takes. In retrospect of how these three gents came to be one of the most important bands in the latter 20th Century, and Sting becoming a musical and cultural icon, this innocent film is a true treasure.
