Terry Robb: Confessin’ My Dues

Flat picker Terry Robb comes from the impressive guitar school of Stefan Grossman and Duck Baker, creating a calliope of strings the ring with the blues on this rich and wonderfully rural album. He plays both acoustic and resonator, adding in some avuncular vocals, either in solo format or teamed with bassist Dave Captein and drummer Gary Hobbs (with a couple guests on the side).

His solo style is a joy to behold, picking and grinning on “Butch Holler Stomp” and lovely on the lyrical “Now Vestapol.” He’s back porch comfy with Captein on the laconic “Blood Red Moon” and with Hobbs, he can boogie hard as he rasps out “Keep Your Judgment” and rollicks on the title track, getting almost metallic on the stomping “Heart Made of Steel” and the thick as sorghum “It Might Get Sweaty.” A nice mix of moods and textures keeps this one varied without losing the basic pulse. Check this guy out, and get him a gig at McCabes!
