Pete Coco: Lined With A Groove

Bassist Pete Coco forms a snappy little trio with pianist Sullivan Fortner (who took some time off touring with Cecile McLorin Salvant) and famed drummer Matt Wilson. The three mix deft interplay with dep grooves, as Fortner gets impressionistic with Coco’s bow on “Sandino” and the team is lyrical on a lovel “AHundred Dollards.” Wilson is deft on the sweet latin “Beautious” and the team dances to Coco’s finger snaps on “Oscalypso.” Coco switches to cello as he takes the lead on a crisp “Deborah/Watergate Blues” and goes to church to testify on a pair of rich gospel tunes, “Be Though My Vision” and “I Have Decided,” both filled with wonder and reverence. His chops and class are in abundance as he’s featured on the post bop “Sandino Exit Music/Bass Desires” but the album does an impressive balance of teamwork and solo features. Filled with rewards.
