Bill Frisell & Thomas Morgan: Epistrophy

This concert recording from the Village Vanguard is a reunion session with guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan. By this stage of his career, Bill Frisell’s followers understand his way of pureeing a tune; the only question is what will be the songs that will be put into his Waring Blender.

The choices and moods are melded together, creating calm and spacious atmosphere’s as the two gents are plaintive for “In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning” and resonant on a languid “Lush Life.” Frisell doesn’t do much experimenting with knobs and pedals this time around, save for the echo (to great effect) on “You Only Live Twice” and chiming on the Monk piece “Pannonica” as well as giving a fun and quirky swing to the Spherical title track. Morgan adds color to the homespun “Red River Valley” and is romantic on the unpretentious and nostalgic “Wildwood Flowe/Save The Last Dance For Me.” Calm and glowing nighttime stories by the campfire.
