Sometimes you forget how much you miss someone.
German based label Jazzhaus recently released this concert recording from July 7, 1998 of Michel Petrucianni’s piano trio with Gary Peacock/b and Roy Haynes/dr. Petrucianni is dearly departed, Haynes rarely performs anymore and Peacock is few and far between, so this concert that seemed so “normal” at the time is like a lost gold nugget.
The trio focuses on a mix of Petruccciani originals and jazz standards, with the interplay between the three like a conversation at a Menses seminar. Peacock weaves in and out like an open field runner returning a punt on the clear and resonant “ In A Sentimental Mood” and is lovely as he wafts like windy drapes on a clever “Embraceable You.” Haynes is nifty while Petrucianni’s fingers fly on “There Will Never Be Another You” and his brushes sashay like Astaire as the trio hustles and bustles through “She Did It Again.” Petrucianni is sweet and bouncy for “Giant Steps” and snaps to Haynes baton for “One For Us.” His touch is gentle and relaxed for “La Shamgagne” and palpably textured on a lively “13th.” The three stallions take turns at the lead on this wonderful run at the race tracks.
