Branford Marsalis Quartet: The Secret Between The Shadow And The Soul

While leader of one of the longer lasting bands around these days, Branford Marsalis hasn’t recorded is team of Joey Calderazzo/p, Eric Revis/b and Justin Faulkner/dr on their own in over 3 years. The telepathic symbiosis is palpable here on this collection of organic originals plus a couple. One cover is a festive calypso street fest of Keith Jarrett’s “The Windup” with everyone dancing in kinetic joy. Calderazzo is in a romantic mood on a thoughtful teaming with Revis on the chiming “Cianna” and the team is Monkish with sharp angles for Marsalis’ sweet soprano during Andrew Hill’s “Snake Hip Waltz” and elegiac on the mellow balm of “Conversations Among The Ruins.” Faulkner’s cymbals undulate during the sublime “Nilaste” with elliptical moods for Marsalis’ tenor on “Dance of the Evil Toys.” The music is like an ESP version of 3 dimensional chess, with the players anticipating each plane jumping mood.
