Wayne Horvitz plays piano along with Hammond B3 and a collection of other keyboards as he teams up with Geoff Harper/b and Eric Eagle/dr for 14 concise themes. Horvitz veers towards Thelonious Monk in song contexts, see-sawing on the frail “Apart From You #1” and joyfully bouncing on “IMB.” He likes to create impressionistic moods with the band as well, sounding Debussy-esque on a dreamy “The Pauls” and teaming well with Eagle’s brushes for “Yukio and Nao’s Duet.” Some experimental tones are created with an echoey piano on “ Fles on Friday” and some synth moods on a spacey “The Trees” with the three getting frisky for “55 6 (21) Variations with dashes of The Bad Plus during the communication being apparent for the pulsating “Northampton.” Personal and lyrical.
