The Rolling Stones: Voodoo Lounge Uncut

The Rolling Stones hadn’t gathered any moss yet on this collection of 1994 concerts. Most famous is their November 25 gig at Joe Robbie Stadium in support of their Voodoo Lounge album, but the extra bones of 10 new songs as well as the bonus performance from New Jersey’s Giants Stadium shows that Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Charlie along with regular touring bassist Daryl Jones was a honky tonkin’ unit.

Jagger is energized, and his voice is both wonderfully strong and leathered. You get some fun guest appearances as well. Bo Diddley chimes in with a rough and ready “Who Do You Love,” Robert Cray gets soulful on “Breakin’ the Blues” and Cheryl Crow brings a festive mood to “Live With Me.”

The band is light years more swinging and bluesy than the days of their Get Your Ya Yas Out era, richly exemplified by deep grooves on “Shattered,” “All Down the Line”  and even “It’s All Over Now.” The previously unreleased tunes include an anthematic “Street Fighting Man” and a wonderfully countrified “Dead Flowers.”

The cd/dvd-blueray combo is fresh and impressive. A real  keeper for fans of The Glimmer Twins during their renaissance.
