Layale Chaker & Sarafand: Inner Rhyme

Violinist Layale Chaker creates Middle Eastern chamber moods with an empathetic team of Jake Charkey/cel, Nick Dunston/b, Phillip Golub/p and Adam Maalouf/perc. Her compositions mix a dash of jazz and blues to her Sahara moods, as her rich violin is pastoral and dream yon the gently pulsed “Return to Jaykur” and the lovely lyrical “On the Trunk of an  Olive Tree.” The strings give Central Asian tones that float over the percussive lilt on “Ushaq” and dance to Dunston’s bass on “Relentless.” Piano and strings get richly melancholic on “Ya Fajr” and broodingly  meditative during “Hawwel Ya Ghannam” while displaying festivities for “Frah Al Donniyeh.” Chaker gives a rich and solemn prayerlike solo on “Half Light” and skips along during a pizzicato’d “Alright Here.” A rich journey through narrow winding streets of the Arabic Mediterranean.
