Julian Gerstin Sextet: The Old City

Armed with various percussion instruments including the tanbou bele, bongos and congas, Julian Gerstin takes you to the narrow streets of Jerusalem along with Anna Patton/cl, Don Anderson/tp-fh, Eugene Uman/p, Wes Brown/b and Ben James/dr. Various corners of the legendary city prevail, with sauntering percussion  on the punchy “Cumbia Sin Cambio” and festive folk moods for “The Deaf Singer.” Patton’s clarinet leads into a modal cruise for “Que Guapo es Me Compay” with Anderson lilting over the percussion discussion during “Pwan Iajan-Lan.” Slithering piano for “Santa Barbara Blues” and some salsa with a hip bass lead of the Afro Cuban “Jugo De Mambo” complete the sonic tour of the city of peace. Lots of spicy flavors to savor.
