Lisa Hilton: Oasis

Pianist and composer Lisa Hilton shows her impressive composing skills as well as ability to create a sonic mood in this latest  trio album with Luques Curtis/b and Mark Whitfield Jr/dr. She’s able to mix classical impressionistic moods a la Debussy, but with a swinging pulse as on a bluesy “Lazy Daisy” and sunlit warm “Sunday Morning.” Her touch creates a chiming and tensile percussiveness that is reminiscent of the likes of Red Garland on the chordy “Watercolor World” with some rich angularity during the chirpy “Just for Fun.” Her take of Gershwin’s “Fascinating Rhythm” includes some impressive drive by Whitfield, with the team giving fuel to the glowing embers of the title track. All of Hilton’s albums reflect journeys and locales, and this one is a rich trip into long sunsets, glistening moons and forgiving sunrises on the sandied horizon.
