Portland Jazz Composer’s Ensemble: From Maxville to Vanport

With music composed by Ezra Weiss, lyrics by S. Renee Mitchell and vocals by Marilyn Keller, the Portland Jazz Composer’s Ensemble provides artsy and fresh sounds with its 12 member team. The band has a pretty big sound with some thick horn section work on “What Do Your Trees  Tell You” with rich soloing by Douglas Detrick/fh and the cadencing “Woman’s Work” featuring John Moak’s trombone.” Keller’s voice is impressive and declaratory as she teams with Rob Davis’ tenor sax on “Oregon Sounds “ while Mieke Bruggeman’s bari sax is relaxed on “Marjorie.” Both trumpeter Farnell Newton and “Keller growl on “Stacked Deck Hand” and the whole team rocks to a climax on the exciting title track. Impressive work.
