Trombonist Peter Nelson mixes and matches artists Alex Barchini/voc, Nikara Warren/vib, Josh Lawrence/tp, Hailey Niswanger/as, Yuma Uesaka/bcl, Willerm Delisfort/p, Raviv Markovitz/b and Itay Marchi/dr on a collection of rich and personal originals. Nelson’s tone is warm and chestnut mare sfot, mixing well with Barchini’s celestial yet flexible voice on a pastoral “It Starts Slowly” as well as on the bouncy indie-inflexed “As We Grow Unfamiliar” with some rich harmonies o “Closure is a Wasted Prayer.” The mixing of woodwinds makes for some wonderful chamber moments on the sweet “Cyclical Maze” with some soft winds added by Lawrence’s trumpet on “Do Nothing.” Gentle and calming, with just enough pulse by the rhythm team as on the cadencing “State of Fear” to keep the eyes on the ball.
