Swinging sounds that are reminiscent of vintage Cal Tjader sessions come to forth with Mike Freeman leading a team of Guido Gonzalez/tp, Ian Stewart/b, Roberto Quintero/perc and Joel Mateo/dr as Freeman provides the good vibes and compositions. The bouncing percussion glistens under Gonzalez’s warm and serene horn on “House of Vibes” and the bopping “Clutch The Hutch” while some picante salsa is served piping hot on “Fancy Free.” Stewart slithers on a sleek “Mister Snacky” and “Night Crawlers” with the rhythm percolating like fried rice on the peppy “Bobby Land.” More relaxed and suave moments exhale on a sauntering “Mambo Kings,” but for the most part the interplay between all of the kinetic sounds makes for irresistible grooves.
