Guitarist and leader Chris Monson brings together a post bop team of Kelly Jefferson/ts, Kevin Turcotte/tp-fh, Anthony Panacci/p, Artie Roth/b and Tom Rasky/dr for a modern post bop team. Monson’s tone is rich and angular on the ¾ “Reach. Reflect. Recoil” and tensile as he gets kinetic with Roth and Rasky on “If We Dreamed of Soaring.” The horns create a soft fed onb “The Rain Collector” and show their jagged edges on the brash “Open Spaces.” Some R&B grooves are supplied by the rhythm team on “Ripple and Collapse” and the band is gentle and gracious during “Distant.
